CHEROKEE, IA. (March 1, 2006) – Sen. Ron Wieck, R- Sioux City, had a bill voted 46-2 in favor by the Senate of Iowa, changing the state’s solid waste management strategy. The strategy change calls for the allowing of more solid waste to be diverted for combustion as alternative energy instead of being placed in landfills.

This bill also changed the regulations that were once in affect on facilities regarding how they meet their energy needs.

“This legislation is good for the economy and the environment,” said Wieck. “Pelletized paper saves needed landfill space and burns cleaner than coal. Expanding alternative energy production also helps create jobs and encourages economic growth for the area.”

Lundell Enterprises of Cherokee creates equipment that converts up to 70 percent of municipal solid waste. Roughly 1.5 tons of pellets equals one ton of coal and burns cleaner than coal. This alternative fuel can help fuel heating systems and power plants.
